Liberal Party Against Visas Regime with RomaniaThe Liberal Party of Moldova (PLM) requests that the Government maintain the present travel regime with Romania for Moldovan citizens and asks the EU to find new solutions for the security of the Moldovan – Romanian border. If the travel regime with Romania is toughened this could lead to Russia having a growing influence in Moldova, the Liberals say.
The introduction of the visas regime with Romania for Moldovan citizens will help Russia expand its political influence in our country and will create a new wall on the Prut, PLM leader Mihai Ghimpu Tuesday told a press conference. Ghimpu accused Moldovan authorities of not having taken the necessary measures to prevent the introduction of the visas regime with Romania and sought that they implement in the shortest time the stipulations of the Plan of Action Moldova – EU at the chapter Customs Service and Border Guards Service. If these stipulations are implemented the EU will accept to maintain the same travel regime between Romania and Moldova as provided in the Moldovan-Romanian intergovernmental agreement from 1991, PLM members say.
On 1 January 2007 Romania will impose a new entry regime for Moldovan citizens, corresponding to the European standards. Bucharest announced that the Moldovans will benefit by a preferential visa system, supposing that the visas will be applied at the customs posts.
At the same time, Romania’s Foreign Minister Mihai-Razvan Ungureanu, has recently stated that the introduction of the preferential regime for traveling to Romania could be compromised, if Moldovan authorities do not cooperate further with Bucharest on this matter and do not present their own initiatives on how to solve the problem. “As from 1 January 2007 we will become the European neighbor of Moldova that will politically and economically survive only if it learns to trust Romania”, Ungureanu said.
